I was amazed when I discovered self investing IRA programs are out there that make it simple for us to start investing 401k money in real estate.
If you’re like me, you have thought about using your 401k to get a better return than your boss does. And you’ve also noticed that even in today’s troubled economic climate, people are making money in real estate. Well, I have discovered we can bring these two things together in a powerful little nest egg builder.
Here’s what I’ve found about using a self investing IRA.
If you have a 401k you can invest part of the money in real estate. That isn’t news to you. But here’s something … you can switch your 401k into a self-detected IRA. That simple change will give you total control over where your money goes and so you can invest it all in real estate!
There are a couple of reasons why this self investing IRA strategy is good (very good!) for you. And the following true story makes this clear.
A lady (who I am not able to name) was wisely putting between two and four percent of her pay into the company’s 401k plan. That plan required most of her money be invested where the company preferred, and she had very little left over to put where she felt was best for her, which was in real estate. She reluctantly accepted this, because she needed to hold on to her job (don’t we all) and anyway there was no knowing if another company’s 401k plan would give her any more control over her investments.
Then the 401k lost 10 percent of its value.
That was a wake-up call for her, she said recently. She looked for a way out, so she could have more control over where her money was being invested. She knew she could roll over her 401k into a traditional IRA. When she looked closer it became apparent this type of IRA would still not let her control all of her money. But she then hit pay dirt: a self-direct IRA would let her put all her money in any investment, including real estate.
At first she was delighted. However, when I heard about her story this lady had just realized that if she went ahead with this self investing IRA she would have to make all the real estate decisions. Where to put the money, how much, and when? That was a little daunting for her. She wanted advice and someone to stand by her as she invested.
So she was seriously considering putting her money with a company offering turn-key real estate investment. Certainly that would take all the weight off her shoulders. Someone else would be doing the paperwork, advising her on legal issues, and finding and maintaining real estate investments that would give her a cash flow and a growth in equity and value.
Personally this is something I would recommend to her or anyone else in her situation. Because there are reliable, experienced businesses out there that you can tie your self investing IAR. Find them online. (Actually, I was on my site that you think "Start.") Your company is inefficient 401k may be thing of the past. With an IRA investment plan you can take advantage of the rising cost of real estate for you.
